The Home Reset Challenge Week 4: The Bedroom

Week 4 here we go! This week we are shifting our focus to the bedroom in our Home Reset Challenge. Not to brag, but I am a master at designing a peaceful bedroom that feels like a sanctuary space. The only problem is I struggle to keep it tidy so it actually feels that way (told ya I wasn't bragging). The truth is, a bedroom that feels like a sanctuary is so important to a peaceful start and end to your day. Your room environment directly impacts sleep and mood. I've said it a million times, but i'm going to keep saying it: your home exists to serve you. This week, let's focus on habits, systems, and decluttering to transform your bedroom into the sanctuary you deserve.

Weekly Habit: Make Your Bed (or Tackle the Dreaded Laundry Chair)

If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed, consider just sticking with the habit we began the challenge with of making your bed every morning. If you are feeling ready to keep up the momentum and tackle

A simple daily habit can make a big difference in how your bedroom feels. This week, choose one of the following habits to work on:

  • Make Your Bed Every Morning: A made bed instantly makes the room look more put together and can set the tone for a productive day.

  • Clear the Laundry Chair: If you’ve got a chair (or another spot) where clean clothes pile up instead of being put away, make it your mission to tackle this daily. By keeping that spot clear, your room will feel less cluttered, and getting ready will be easier.

Remember, consistency is key! Commit to your chosen habit every day this week.

Simple System: Pillow and Blanket Storage

Making your bed is so much easier when you have a system for storing extra pillows and blankets. Here are some ideas to streamline the process:

  • Basket or Bin: Use a large decorative basket or bin near your bed to quickly toss extra pillows or blankets when you need to make your bed. I keep one for my neck heating pad and acupressure mat by the bed, so it's easy to toss them in when not in use.

  • Under-Bed Storage: Use under-bed storage bags or bins (some of my favorites linked here) for seasonal blankets or extra linens.

  • Built-In Bench or Ottoman: If you have space, consider adding a storage bench or ottoman at the foot of your bed. It doubles as storage and seating! This bench was one of my favorite additions to my bedroom. I keep extra sheets stored there, and it's where I put accent pillows and blankets there at night so it's easy to grab them to make the bed in the morning.

Having a dedicated spot for these items will make it easier to keep your bedroom tidy, and reinforce helpful habits.

Declutter Challenge: Nightstand

Your nightstand can easily become a catch-all for books, water glasses, phone chargers, and more. Mine is wayyyyy overdue for a declutter and clean (I spilled a hakaa FULL of milk, and let's just say I can really tell where I hurriedly missed cleaning up in the middle of the night on my black nightstand). This week, set aside 15 minutes to declutter your nightstand:

  1. Clear Everything Off: Empty the surface and drawers completely.

  2. Sort and Purge: Toss out trash, relocate items that don’t belong, and donate anything you no longer use.

  3. Keep Only Essentials: Limit what stays to items you truly need, like a lamp, an alarm clock, a book, or a glass of water.

  4. Organize: Use small containers or dividers in your nightstand drawer to keep things tidy and easy to find.

I have some helpful ideas for cord storage and drawer organization here, as well as my favorite nightstands that have built in storage and charging stations. Once your nightstand is decluttered, enjoy the calm that comes with a simplified space.

Recap of This Week’s Focus:

  • Habit: Make your bed or keep your laundry chair clear.

  • System: Set up storage for pillows and blankets.

  • Declutter: Tidy and organize your nightstand.
